The scenes from the famous Russian Fairy tale "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" are depicted on the dolls. Popular in Russia through a poem by Pushkin.
Tsar Saltan overhears three sisters talking of their future plans, and decides to marry the one whose aim is to give birth to a bogatyr, employing the other two. These last are jealous, and when the Tsar's bride gives birth to a child they doctor the correspondence between her and the Tsar - who is away at war - to make it look as if she has borne a monster, and that the Tsar has commanded that his Queen and son be cast adrift at sea in a sealed battle.
By the time the barrel washes ashore in a strange land the boy has grown and when he sees a kite attacking a swan , he saves swan's life, only to discover that she is an enchanted princess and the kite an evil magician. The boy, Prince Gvidon, then becomes ruler over the great city of that land.
A merchant ship arrives en rout for Tsar Saltan's country and the Swan Princess turns Gvidon into a gnat so that he can follow the vessel. the merchants tell Saltan about Gvidon's city, but the wicked sisters dissuade him from going. Gvidon as the gnat bites one of them and escapes. Back emerald kernels. Gvidon builds a crystal house for squirrel and lets the merchants see it in the next time they call. Saltan is intrigued when he hears of it, but once again the sisters dissent, saying that a greater marvel is to view thirty-three bogatyrs and Chernomor rising from the sea, and Gvidon, now a fly, is obliged to bite the other sister on the eye.
The Swan Princess informs Gvidon that these bogatyrs are her brothers, and when the merchants call again they witness this spectacle, and, back in saltan's court, describe it to him. But, the sisters object, a greater marvel is the miraculous princess with the star above her head. Gvidon, now a bee, stings one of them on the nose, only to discover that the miraculous princess and the Swan Princess are one and the same. He marries her, and this is reported back to Saltan by the merchants the Tsar sets sail with his fleet, is reunited with his wife and son and views all the wonders of their kingdom.

In work the artists used tempera with egg emulsion and fine polecat brushes. Very rich and bright paints including gold ("patal") are used. All the drawings of this item are made by the real artist so delicate and subtle, that as a whole the doll is just breathtaking! Everything is shining and sparkling.

Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to paint the composition on this box. The palette is full of colors that are bright and vibrant. All aspects of the scene are intricately detailed with fine lines created with precise brushwork. Gold and aluminum paints are also used to add even more detail. There is a great sense of balance and linear flow in these compositions.
