Russian traditional icon painting on wood. Legendary Nicholas Wondermaker is depicted on this beautifully done icon painting in the Old Palekh Icon Painting style. It measures 6 1/2" high and 6 1/4" at the widest part.  Excellent quality painting and lacquer work.  Saint's face with exaggeratedly high wrinkled forehead long thin nose and small mouth is close to the face of Kiev icons. This is traditional image of ascetic and thinker Refinement of picturesque range built on combination of dim ochre tone of face, red brown clothes, thickly covered with silver thin shade, bright scarlet strip of edge of gospel with light silver background of icon correspond to aristocratic refined saint's appearance. St. Nicholas in fourth century was known as "the great wonderworker; a speedy helper, and an uncommon mediator of God." This pious bishop lived in the Lycian town of Myra where he performed most of his miracles and generous deeds. His most well known deeds came around the time of Christmas, when he would leave gold in the homes of poor families on Christmas Eve, and give help to any person who needed it. His relics are now laid at rest in Rome.
